Maintaining Chartered Status

Earning the Chartered Professional Mediator (ChPM) designation is a significant professional achievement — maintaining it reflects an ongoing commitment to excellence, ethics, and public trust. PMBS requires all Chartered Mediators to remain active, current, and accountable through continuing education, adherence to professional standards, and timely renewal.

These requirements ensure that the ChPM credential remains meaningful, credible, and aligned with national best practices in mediation.

Continuing Professional Development

Chartered mediators must engage in ongoing learning to stay current with evolving mediation practices, ethics, and research. Continuing education may include:

  • Advanced mediation training
  • Specialized workshops or institutes
  • Continuing legal, mental health, financial, or mediation education
  • Conferences or professional development events
  • Approved online courses or webinars

PMBS may request documentation of continuing education activities during renewal or audit.

Adherence to the PMBS Code of Conduct

All Chartered Mediators must uphold the PMBS Code of Conduct, which outlines expectations for:

  • Neutrality and impartiality
  • Confidentiality
  • Professional boundaries
  • Competence and diligence
  • Ethical decision‑making
  • Respect for party self‑determination

Violations of the Code may result in review, corrective action, or revocation of chartered status.

Renewal Requirements

Chartered status must be renewed at regular intervals as defined by PMBS policy. Renewal ensures that mediators remain active in the field and continue to meet professional standards. Renewal requirements typically include:

  • Verification of continuing education
  • Confirmation of active mediation practice
  • Attestation to ethical compliance
  • Payment of renewal fees

PMBS will notify Chartered Mediators in advance of renewal deadlines.

Changes in Professional Status

Chartered Mediators must notify PMBS of any significant changes that may affect their credential, including:

  • Disciplinary actions by courts or professional bodies
  • Loss of required professional liability insurance
  • Legal or ethical issues impacting mediation practice

Timely reporting ensures transparency and protects the integrity of the credential.

Reinstatement

If a mediator’s chartered status lapses, PMBS provides a reinstatement process. Requirements may include:

  • Submission of a reinstatement application
  • Updated documentation
  • Proof of continuing education
  • Payment of reinstatement fees

Reinstatement policies are outlined in the PMBS Handbook.
