Becoming a Chartered Professional Mediator (ChPM) begins with a clear, structured application process. This ensures fairness, consistency, and transparency for every candidate. The steps below outline how applicants move from initial submission to the written examination and performance‑based assessment.
1. Review the PMBS Handbook
Applicants should begin by reviewing the PMBS Credentialing Handbook, which provides detailed information about eligibility requirements, documentation standards, examination procedures, and assessment policies.
This ensures that every applicant understands the full scope of the chartering process before applying.
2. Prepare Required Documentation
Applicants must gather documentation supporting the first five pillars:
- Education and professional experience
- Mediation training
- Mediation hours and resolved cases
- Mentorship, internship, supervision, or case review
- Testimonials, references, reviews, and accreditations
All documentation must be complete, accurate, and ready for submission.
Entries used in one pillar cannot be reused in another.
3. Submit the Application
Applicants may submit their application in one of two ways:
- Online submission through the secure PMBS portal
- Fillable PDF, completed and uploaded through the PMBS website
All applications must be signed and dated.
A non‑refundable $150 application fee is required at the time of submission.
4. Application Review
Once submitted, PMBS staff review the application for completeness and eligibility.
During this stage:
- Applicants may be contacted for clarification or additional documentation
- Applications may be audited for accuracy
- All information is handled confidentially in accordance with the PMBS Privacy Policy
Failure to respond to requests for additional information may result in denial of eligibility.
5. Approval and Exam Scheduling
Upon approval, applicants receive:
- Access to their secure applicant account
- Instructions for scheduling the written examination
- Technical requirements for live‑remote proctoring
- Payment instructions for the $350 written exam fee
The written exam must be scheduled and completed within the applicant’s eligibility window.
6. Take the Written Examination
The written exam is administered via Live‑Remote Proctoring (LRP).
Candidates must comply with all identification, security, and technical requirements.
Results are released approximately 30 days after the testing window closes.
7. Schedule the Performance‑Based Assessment
Candidates who pass the written exam may schedule their performance‑based assessment directly with the Maryland Council for Dispute Resolution (MCDR).
Payment for this assessment is made directly to MCDR.
8. Complete the Performance‑Based Assessment
Candidates submit a one‑page Self‑Statement and participate in a live, observed mediation simulation.
MCDR reports a Pass/No‑Pass result to PMBS.
9. Award of Chartered Status
Candidates who successfully complete all seven pillars — including both assessments — are awarded the designation of Chartered Professional Mediator (ChPM).
